The journey to the fire was quite long, and it was pretty exhausting but because of the views you can see from so high, it was all worth it. Just before the morning came I got to see the the blue fire for a while, and it looked magical. The path down was qute dangerous, June 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Pebri was great and will recommend to anyone looking for a guide, his service and knowledge was superb which made the whole trek so much more. We started at 4am and finished at almost 9am. For someone who doesnât exercise, the trek was tiring. For 70% of the trek it was at an incline of 40-60 degrees. Def bring a hiking pole - it helped so much, both when going up and to help in balance when coming down. When we reached the top, the view was breath taking and was all worth the hard work. We were blessed by good clear weather. Pebri brought us further up and he knew all the best spots for photos. Bring some light snacks so that you can munch breakfast at the top as well. Good trekking shoes are a must. We started off with three layers as it was cold, but soon removed the layers as we started the trek and gained body heat. The trek at the start is pitch black so you can rent head lamps if you donât have one at the base area. We didnât manage to catch the blue fire as it has been closed since Jan due to the toxic level of gas, but even without it, it was still a worth whole experience and that shouldnât deter you. Some level of basic fitness is required, wonât recommend for young kids or older folks if you donât exercise regularly. Highly recommended!!! Read our transparency report to learn 2022My hotel was able to organize the tour for me - I joined a group and left Banyuwangi at midnight, to arrive at the Volcano park and begin the hike at 2am when the park opens. All hikers are provided a headlight & gas mask. It's a pretty easy hike, but be warned it's quite a steep hike up for about 2kms, either way. The Blue flame lava caused by the sulphur is the main attraction & that's where you'll need to wear your mask - it was simply the most extraordinary thing I've ever seen! You've got about to get to the blue flames before sunrise where it can't be seen, so just plan around that - I found it to be quite a comfortable hike and pace. But I hike a bit. I have been told that if it rains the blue flames might not be there and that the park is closed on the 1st Friday of every month. I ensured I was in the local area for 2 days because it was one of the key things I came to do - plan to avoid disappointment would be my advice. It's an hour drive there and back, so bring some small change for the toilet and snacks, there are little shops at the entrance of the December 21, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's a steady and steep climb to the top so you'll need to be somewhat fit. To get to the bluefire you'll need to climb down to the mines and the paths are sandy and slippery which means it's harder to climb back up too. My advice is don't make the bluefire as your primary goal, you have to be lucky to be able to see it as it really depends on a lot of things. Just enjoy the hike as mountain if you have asthma, don't go down to the mines. Youll also need to pay for drone permit, so disappointedWritten October 20, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is closer to Banyuwangi, but the road can be very steep and badly deteriorated. A jeep is quite helpful, although difficult to hire in Banyuwangi and outrageously expensive. Most people walk the last 8 km from about 64 km along the road to Paltuding Post the PHPA Post, the starting point, or the trek to the crater from Bondowoso. Once youâve arrived at Paltuding Post, you can trek your way up to the edge of the Ijen crater caldera through a 3 km long route. The daily climbing schedule starts at 0100 AM up until 1200 AM. However, during the restriction period, the climbing schedule will instead start at 0300 FOR MOUNT IJEN CRATER TREKA gas mask or filtration mask You can rent this in the parking lot at Ijen Crater. For 40,000 rupiah you can get a mask that covers your mouth and nose with a small filter. It isnât perfect but it helps a lot. Most people use these and you are only doing near the Sulfur for a short period of time or really as long as you like. Thereâs no need to go close to flashlight or headlamp The trail is pretty simple the whole way and we had a full moon so we only used one light between us. I do suggest at least one torch or headlamp between you and a partner. They also sell things in the Ijen Crater parking lot for about $4Warm Jacket It was cold but because we were hiking up I actually had my jacket off most of the way. Waiting for sunrise at the top when we stopped moving was cold but only lasted thirty minutes until it warmed up with the rising sun. It isnât as cold as Bromo and I found it warmer than I shoes I had Salomon hiking shoes, which were great and I suggest proper hiking shoes as they can be quite slippery. However, my friends just used normal sneakers. Definitely, donât do this one in flip-flops!Water and snacks There are no vendors once you are on the trail for the most part. I think I noticed one shop but Iâm not sure it was open. Pack your snacks and water. We were there for a long time taking photos and videos so we packed a bit extra. There are Warungs and cafes near the parking lot for when you exit Ijen FEE TO IJEN CRATERThe entrance fee for foreigners was 150,000 rupiah, which is about $10 USD. For locals and all Indonesians, the fee was only about $1 USD.
